Buzz Yudell

Buzz Yudell’s passion for architecture stems from a blend of artistic and social interests. While at Yale College, his studies in sculpture were enriched by an exploration of the sciences and humanities. Graduate studies at the Yale School of Architecture expanded his focus to include scales ranging from small constructions to urban design, beginning his long collaboration with Charles Moore. In 1977, Buzz, Charles, and John Ruble founded Moore Ruble Yudell, a partnership rooted in shared humanistic values and a commitment to collaboration.

Buzz has worked closely with John Ruble to broaden the firm’s expertise in campus, cultural, civic, residential, and commercial architecture. They have pioneered sustainable community planning and architecture, applying advanced sustainable practices to projects in both Europe and the United States.

Buzz has led the design of numerous significant projects, including the Steger Student Life Center at the University of Cincinnati, Manzanita Village Housing at UC Santa Barbara, the Camana Bay town master plan in Grand Cayman, and the new U.S. Embassy in Berlin, Germany. His work also includes master planning for campuses like UCLA, MIT, and Dartmouth College, as well as the new Santa Monica Public Library.

In addition to his architectural practice, Buzz has been dedicated to teaching, writing, and community service, contributing to the theoretical and cultural role of architecture in shaping communities. He has taught at institutions such as Yale, UCLA, and the University of Texas at Austin, and held the Howard Friedman Chair of Architecture at UC Berkeley.

Buzz and John’s leadership was recognized with the 2006 National AIA Firm Award, and in 2007, they received the AIA Los Angeles Gold Medal Award.
