Hugh G. Pearman

Hugh Pearman is a London-based author and editor specialising in architecture and design. He was architecture critic for The Sunday Times newspaper for 30 years to 2016 , overlapping with his 14-year tenure as editor of the Journal of the Royal Institute of British Architects, from which he retired in 2020. His connection with the RIBA goes back to 1996 when he helped establish its annual Stirling Prize for architecture, and he was elected an Honorary Fellow of the Institute in 2001. He has written and appeared widely in other media. As an author his books include ‘Contemporary World Architecture’ (Phaidon, 1998), ‘Airports: a century of architecture’ (Laurence King/Abrams, 2004) and ‘About Architecture: an essential guide in 55 buildings’ (Yale University Press, 2023). He was Visiting Professor in Architecture at the Royal College of Art, London, during 2015. In 2019 Her Majesty the Queen appointed him Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to architecture.
