Destination Stockholm
June 14 – June 18
Stockholm is the capital and largest city of Sweden and is the largest urban area in the Nordic countries. The city
stretches across fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren flows into the Baltic Sea.Outside the city to the east and
along the coast is the island chain of the Stockholm archipelago. Stockholm is the cultural, media, political and
economic center of Sweden. The region around Stockholm accounts for over a third of Sweden’s GDP and is
among the top ten regions in Europe with respect to GDP per capita. Stockholm hosts the annual Nobel Prize
ceremonies and banquet at the Stockholm Concert Hall and Stockholm City Hall. The city is Sweden’s primary
financial center, serves as the headquarters of many of Sweden’s largest companies and is one of the major
centers of technology development in Europe.
Each of the city’ districts is known for its own unique character: Södermalm for its bohemian creative atmosphere; Östermalm for its elegant architecture and cultural institutions; and Norrmalm for its vibrant energy as am commercial hub.Stockholm’s Old Town (Gamla Stan) is the city’s historic center, consisting of Stadsholmen Island and the islets of Riddarholmen, Helgeandsholmen and Strömsborg. It dates from the 13th century, but the majority of its buildings were constructed during the 17th and 18th centuries. Stortorget is the Gamla Stan’s main square and many of the area’s major sites are cluttered around it, including the baroque Royal Palace (Kungliga Slottet) and the Royal Chapel (Storkyrkan).
The focus of BALT’s visit to Stockholm will be modern architecture as well as art and industrial design, including projects by important architects such as Gunnar Asplund, Sigurd Lewerentz, Ralph Erskin, Sven Markelius, Léonie Geisendorf, Ragnar Österberg and others. However, Stockholm has a wealth of spectacular historic architecture as well, including Nordic Classicism and National Romanticism, and BALT will visit outstanding examples of each.
