Congratulations to Federico Marcomini for being chosen for the 2026 BALT Fellowship Grant!
Federico Marcomini is an early-career architectural historian whose research focuses on the global circulation of classical and Palladian models and their historiographical construction from the eighteenth century to the present. After earning his PhD in the History of Architecture and the City from the University of Florence in 2024, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Bibliotheca Hertziana – Max Planck Institute for Art History in Rome in 2025, where he explored the reception of classical and Palladian models beyond Europe. Since 2023, he has been a Research Assistant at the Centro Internazionale di Studi di Architettura Andrea Palladio, contributing to curatorial and research projects while pursuing studies on Palladian historiography and transnational encounters. His work has been presented at international conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals.
Federico’s research focuses on the historiography and cultural construction of Andrea Palladio and the development of “Palladianism” within British and post-war architectural discourse. Rather than studying Palladio’s buildings directly, the project examines how his legacy was shaped through scholarship, exhibitions, and institutions such as the Royal Institute of British Architects. Through archival research at the British Architectural Library and related collections in London, Federico will investigate how historians including Rudolf Wittkower transformed Palladio into a foundational figure for modern architectural theory and identity, contributing to a broader study on the role of historiography in architectural culture.
