Frederick A. Bland

For nearly 50 years, Frederick Bland has provided design leadership on a wide range of projects in the U.S. and abroad. Fred joined Beyer Blinder Belle in 1972 and became the first partner to join the founders in 1978. He served as Managing Partner from 2004 to 2021, fostering a culture of respect, creativity, and collaboration. His focus on civic, cultural, and residential commissions reflects his belief in the impact of the built environment on society. Fred’s designs, whether for downtown redevelopment plans or cultural institutions, are contemporary while respecting the context and sense of place.
Fred has directed over 200 projects, including notable works for the Episcopal Church, the University at Buffalo, and new buildings like the Mark Morris Dance Center in Brooklyn and the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville. He earned Fellowship in the American Institute of Architects in 1993 and has served on various AIA design juries and committees.
Fred is deeply committed to civic engagement. Since 2008, he has been a commissioner of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, serving as Vice Chairman since 2017 and Interim Chair in 2018. He is Chair Emeritus of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and serves as Chair of the Evergreens Cemetery in Brooklyn. Fred is also involved with several cultural and historical organizations, including the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Gracie Mansion Advisory Committee.
For 30 years, Fred was an Adjunct Professor at NYU’s Department of Art History, Urban Design, and Architecture Studies. He holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Yale.
