Destination Helsinki
June 15 – June 19
Helsinki is Finland’s administrative, economic, scientific and cultural nexus. As its capital and largest city, Helsinki is the country’s economic and logistical center and its historic growth engine. Helsinki’s rich and complex history in the Baltic region spans centuries. Founded in 1550 as a Swedish port city to rival the Hanseatic League, conquered by Russia in 1808 and achieving independence only in 1917, Helsinki has had a strategic role in geopolitics to the present day. Well known for its vital artistic heritage, Helsinki has been a renowned global leader in modern architecture, design and culture during a century of great social and political change.
The British Architectural Trust (BALT) invites you to explore the history of this extraordinary city in the company of those who will place its architectural legacy in context, from the city’s great examples of Nordic Classicist architecture to the remarkable work of groundbreaking architects such as Eliel Saarinen and Alvar Aalto to the exciting contemporary projects of architects and industrial designers in Finland today.
